This is interesting because I think the same problem could be said about a lot of Chrono Trigger as far as characters go. get over the flaws, the game is so good :( The game is flawed, to be fair, but like. I know a lot of people feel very strongly about the game, especially fans of Trigger. Makes sense that the art director for CC went on to be the director of BK! They're very different in a lot of ways, but pretty much equally unique and memorable. The game feels like Baten Kaitos' older cousin. Both of my playthroughs have felt surprisingly different due to the choices I've made.ĩ. Even though a lot of the rewards are things like extra attacks for characters I won't ever use, a lot of the time, optional content provides additional cutscenes that provide backstory for your party members which makes me want to seek them out, even for characters I don't want to use. The overwhelming (IMO) amount of optional content/replay value/things to discover. Every location is fucking beautiful and I can't get enough of the world.Ĩ. Okay for real, I have a thing for water motifs/island settings, AND for fantasy mixed with sci-fi. I might change my mind this time around, but I doubt it.ħ. Sure, a majority of the plot is shoved down your throat in the last, like, 5 hours, and Disc 2 did feel a bit rushed, but I still loved everything nonetheless.
I'd get into it but I'm starting to feel lazy rn and no longer feel like putting effort into this post. It's one of the few turn-based battle systems I find engaging despite its lack of difficulty and no timing/positioning elements like Grandia, Shadow Hearts, etc.Ħ. I love the Weak/Medium/Strong attack risk/reward system, the element system, and the element radius system (that sadly is largely negligible due to the game's lack of difficulty). I almost never like anything that isn't exactly bombastic (CC's soundtrack uses a ton of melodies but the tracks are typically more on the "atmospheric" side IMO, though maybe I'm just crazy) so I'm surprised that I love the soundtrack, including the battle theme (though it can get a little grating if it plays for too long lol). The CG cutscenes also still look really good IMO.Ģ.

Though I need to fiddle with my TV settings for 3 hours in order to make the game not look like an ugly clump of pixels, once that's said and done, I can admire the absolutely beautiful locations this game has to offer.
I honestly have not bothered with this at all as it sounds like a huge pain in the ass.ġ. This can be done by equipping a "Trap (Element)" element in one of your slots, and using it on that specific enemy BEFORE they cast the element that you're trying to capture. For summons and some high-level elements, in order to obtain them, you have to capture them from VERY SPECIFIC enemies. The two dimensions can sometimes be difficult to keep track of (such as: which dimension had this person acting hostile and which dimension had that person acting friendly? In which dimension was the village lively, in which dimension was it deserted?).ĥ. Sometimes it's a little difficult to know what to do. But I'm also not a fan of cakewalks, so it's a shame that the fast forward option is stuck in such a dumb mode.ģ. I'm definitely not a "I NEED GAMES TO BE HARD" person I have no issues dropping a game's difficulty if it allows me to. but it's only available in NG+ and NG+ makes the already easy game even easier. I think it's a LOT better in this regard compared to its other PS1 JRPG peers, but CC still suffers from some battle animations not being snappy enough. Luckily, this has been a very small portion of fights and bosses are super frequent so it almost feels like stat increases are constant.Ģ.
A lot of battles give me useful material, but there's still some instances here and there where I'm forced to fight lame ass enemies that give nothing rewarding. The stat progression system actually mostly works pretty well. I'm not done yet (still on Disc 1), but I love it more now than I did back then.ġ. I first played it 6 years ago, and this is my replay. Yeah it's really weird in a lot of ways, and on paper I hate the stat progression system but a lot of things just gel together perfectly in my eyes.
